A Closing Reception Opens Doors

March 29, 2012

If you are having an art exhibition, I highly recommend offering a closing reception in addition to the opening reception. It gives folks another chance to see the show and meet the artist. Since the opening reception for ART*SPARKS was on a Saturday afternoon, the closing reception on a Sunday afternoon provided people with the option of a different day of the week. (more…)

Some Art Bites of the Big Apple: NYC

March 23, 2012

I just returned from an “art excursion” to New York City. It goes without saying that New York is the place to see all kinds of art. Here are a couple of “Art Bites” that I recommend in case you can get there in person or online.

The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), 2 Columbus Circle, is one of my favorite art museums in NYC. I have never been disappointed by the exhibitions there. Currently there is a particularly compelling exhibit that I highly recommend:
Swept Away: Dust, Ashes, and Dirt in Contemporary Art and Design, thru August 12, 2012

Another gem I discovered more recently is the Ford Project, 57 west 57th Street, 19th and 20th Floor
Two great shows there, one for horse lovers and one for rock music lovers.

Always powerful and very moving for me is the beautiful mosaic design of the Imagine Memorial to John Lennon in Central Park at 72nd Street. If you go to see it, take the time to read the inscriptions on the nearby park benches.

Making Mixed-Media Monotypes on Canvas for the ART*SPARKS Solo Show

In the beginning there is only a piece of frosted mylar that I coat with gum arabic. This becomes the printing plate. Sometimes I lay a pencil sketch under the translucent mylar. Next I turn on the music and draw and paint on the mylar until I am happy with the image. The image is transferred to dampened paper with my etching press. It is always exciting to pull up the paper from the plate
and see how the print has turned out! Next, I “put the print to bed” between layers of blotters under heavy books until the next day.

Now I have to decide which parts of the print will be raised and which lowered. Then I tape the monotype to a piece of acid free foam board and CUT THROUGH THE PRINT and the foam board with a mat knife for the raised layers. This is the scary part, because once I cut, I can’t turn back. (more…)

It has been really fun to participate in this large group show with the Washington Printmakers Gallery and DC Glass Works at the Ronald Reagan National Airport.  It is the first time that I have had the opportunity to show paintings from my Fearless Flying series in a actual airport.  This show is on view thru the end of April in the Gallery Walk, part of the public concourse to Terminal A. Stop by and see it if you have a chance!

Creativity Unblocked!

March 4, 2012

Creativity is Universal
Creative challenges and blocks do not only apply to artists, writers, and musicians. Everyone has creative aspects about their lives and personhood.

Early last year I was involved in creating a series of paintings for a solo show scheduled for 2013 in New York. I realized with a shock that I only had 10 months to prepare for my 2012 solo show at the Washington Printmakers Gallery. I had been thinking about an idea for the show, but no images had come into my mind. The more I thought about what I was going to do, the more my mind was a blank. I began to feel very anxious
